Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Exhibition Halls 1 and 2 경기도미술관 전시실 1·2 The Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art presents the 2025 Gyeonggi Artist Spotlight, ""Where The Small Begins."" Now in its fourth year, the Gyeonggi Artist Spotlight is a special exhibition organized in collaboration with the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation's Arts Department to delve into the works of established artists based in Gyeonggi Province. ""From Small Things"" will feature 28 works by Kim Na-young & Gregory Maas, Park Hye-soo, and Choi Xooang, along with new works. "Where The Small Begins"" explores the artistic world of artists Nayoung Kim & Gregory Maas, Hyesoo Park, and Xooang Choi, starting from their approach to their work. Sometimes, infinite possibilities can be glimpsed in small moments, rather than grand meanings. This exhibition focuses on the small moments that initiate the work of these three ar.tists (and their teams), revealing how these moments shaped their current sculptural forms. Their ""small things"" are not simply a matter of size; they represent the artists' attitudes toward the world and their methods of creating their work. Starting with small sculptures, the three artists (and teams) expanded their perspectives to encompass relationships with institutions, society, and materiality. Nayoung Kim & Gregory Maas playfully incorporate collaborations with their surroundings into their work, presenting this in various forms, including exhibitions, performances, and publications. Their Kim Kim Gallery goes beyond simply operating an exhibition space; it's an experiment in rethinking artists, artworks, and the structure of the art world. This project, which operates on the boundaries of institutions without a fixed location, is presented for the first time in a public art museum. Hyesoo Park collects and analyzes small personal narratives to sculpturally capture the phenomena and emotions of Korean society. This work presents a synesthetic unfolding of the artist's accumulated accounts of North Korean defectors, protesters, and visitors. Xooang Choi explores new possibilities for viewing the human body through his daily sculptural practice. The exhibition showcases the process of accumulating time and material through new, space-occupying works and diverse media beyond sculpture. As we follow the exhibition and examine the artistic language and sensibilities they have cultivated, we encounter their perspectives and attitudes, cultivated over over 20 years. Just as great change begins from small cracks, we hope that those who view ""Where The Small Begins"" will discover the infinite possibilities that can be created from small beginnings. Curator of the exhibition is Yoo Chae-rin.
