trash flag began with an overwhelming and irrational desire to paint the American flag. Over the course of 8 months, I gathered trash, painted it red, white, and blue, and then reassembled it in new combinations. *trash flag* asks: what is the flag and what does it carry? The hope of prosperity? The shame of assimilation into the settler-colonial project?It's irrational to love something that lies to you, and when the veil is pulled it can drive you crazy. I explore these questions through material and ritual. Each used and unwanted object becomes part of a larger meditation on reclamation, belonging and the contradictions of being American.
