The second team-up between director Brian De Palma and star Al Pacino, following 1983's SCARFACE, invariably acts as a perfect companion. In the ways that Tony Montana goes out of his way to play the villain, ex-con Carlito Brigante finds himself a reformed dreamer looking to leave the past behind. Crooked lawyer Kleinfeld (Sean Penn as Art Garfunkel) and up-and-coming gangster Benny Blanco (John Leguizamo) have other plans. A Grand Guignol tragedy, pitched to the rafters in a way only Brian De Palma could deliver, CARLITO'S WAY is the high water mark for both director and star for the 1990s.
