**CATHODE CINEMA PRESENTS - MURDER DRONE : A DOUBLE FEATURE** French DIY slasher cinema stripped down to blood, bone and droning noise. ∆ **Folies Meurtrières aka Killing Spree** (1984) Imagine if Eric Rohmer decided to shoot a compilation tape from mail-order-horror sleazoids W.A.V.E. Productions after chain-watching Fulci bootlegs...that’s the vibe of Folies. Shot on Super 8 by first-time gore-hound Antoine Pellissier in a French suburb, and it’s pure outsider energy. The warbled synth-pop soundtrack channels a pillow fight between Goblin, Depeche Mode, and Trio’s Casio collection. The blown-out photography is inventive and suggestive, jumping between gorgeous handheld compositions and imagery that looks like it was soaked in light leaks on film that expired in 1963. Ambient sound effects (owls, wind, cats) are mismatched against an editing style that can best be described as epileptic. This is an audio-visual steamroller, pushing scenes that are already bizarre to a new level of madness. Have you ever seen a car that bleeds? If so, it never looked like this. The “plot” is a killer on a motorcycle, chainsaws, garden shears, and axes made from tin foil. Five vignettes of senseless carnage that somehow mutate into essential mutant poetry. (48min, Restoration Courtesy of Bleeding Skull) ~ **Ogroff: The Mad Mutilator** (1983) If 'The Burning' was remade as a home-video noise set inside a Grimm fairy tale, you’d land somewhere near Ogroff. Directed by video shop owner and horror zine publisher Norbert Moutier, this is the godfather of French DIY gore trash. Shot on Super 8 and stitched together with synths, kung-fu sound effects, and pure mania. The first half of Ogroff contains no plot to speak of. When the simplistic story arc takes shape, it’s a complete surprise. I won’t ruin that for you, but there’s no harm in conveying the trip we take to get there. Ogroff, clad in his rubber boots, knit cap, and metal mask, sets up house in a shack within a forest. He spends his time viciously attacking anyone that gets too close, destroying property, and masturbating with his pick-ax. He also pops out of car trunks for no apparent reason. Your eyes will be scorched in awe. The ending will leave you wanting more. (87min) ~ Just in time for Halloween, lose yourself in French outsider cinema at its rawest. A warped feedback loop of gore and static. One night only!
