18th Street Arts Center, Santa Monica
Saturday October 17 | 10am – 5pm 18th Street Arts Center 1639 18th Street, Santa Monica, CA 90404 Free + Open to the Public Please RSVP for this event below. Join us at 18th Street Arts Center for a special livestream gathering with artist and storyteller Dan Kwong’s Manzanar Baseball Project, bringing together baseball, history, and Japanese American community memory. The project revisits the powerful history of baseball at Manzanar, where Japanese Americans incarcerated during World War II built teams, leagues, and a vibrant baseball culture within the camp. Through storytelling, performance, and community engagement, Kwong connects this history to larger questions of resilience, belonging, and what communities create in the face of displacement. Gather with us to watch the livestream together and experience this ongoing project connecting Manzanar’s past with communities today. Event activities will include baseball-themed arts and crafts stations, free food and refreshments, and a closing ceremony centered around Obon Dance. If you can’t join us in-person, feel free to tune into the livestream: Manzanar Baseball Project’s Grand Opening Doubleheader Partnering Organizations: About 18th Street Art Center 18th Street Arts Center amplifies the impact of artists on society. Conceived in 1988 as a radical think tank in the shape of an artist community by Linda Frye Burnham and Susanna Bixby Dakin, 18SAC supports artists from around the globe through its residency programs to imagine, research, and develop significant, meaningful new artworks and share them with the public. We provide artists the space and time to take risks, and to create experiences and partnerships that foster positive social change. For more information, please visit 18thstreet.org.
