Sam Raimi’s first “comic book movie” isn’t actually based on one, but fans of comic books, Universal monster movies, and pulp crime stories will find plenty to love about this thrilling superhero action rager. Liam Neeson plays a scientist with a very particular set of skills acquired over a long career: namely, the ability to make 3D-printed synthetic skin masks. After gangsters blow up his lab (with him in it), doctor becomes patient, and the deformed Neeson uses a mix of disguises and Phantom of the Opera/The Shadow style creepin’ to make life a nightmare for those who burned him. Raimi, still in the middle of his Evil Dead trilogy, doesn’t shy away from violence and mayhem, and DARKMAN earns its R-rating with ease. A strong supporting role from Frances McDormand places this one firmly in the top tier of Raimi’s catalog.
