Director Robert Zemeckis' deliciously twisted black comedy begins with Broadway has-been Meryl Streep bulldozing her way through a memorably misguided disco number and Goldie Hawn gorging herself on canned cake frosting – and things only get weirder and wilder from there. DEATH BECOMES HER offers up a classic catfight unlike anything you've ever seen, as terminally vain Madeline Ashton (Streep) clashes with her lifelong rival, beauty expert Helen Sharp (Hawn), in a perilous quest for eternal youth and glamour. Caught in the middle are plastic surgeon Ernest Menville (Bruce Willis) and the mysterious goddess-y Lisle Von Rhuman (Isabella Rossellini), who peddles an ancient elixir that provides "a touch of magic in this world obsessed with science." We've often heard "beauty is pain," and Madeline and Helen take that old adage to hair-raising new extremes. DEATH BECOMES HER deservedly won the best visual effects Oscar in 1993. But the eye-popping digital wizardry doesn't eclipse sensational comic performances from Streep, Hawn, and Willis, who create a hilariously offbeat love triangle under Zemeckis' stylish direction, and Alan Silvestri's urgently over-the-top score is the perfect frosting on this bittersweet cake.
