Subtitled “Emotional and Political Lives,” Disparate Action was first produced in 1980 under the auspices of the New York City theater company Mabou Mines. Two friends and roommates, “Chris” (Chris Kraus) and “Tom” (Tom Yemm), living in a small apartment in the East Village, stage a lecture-demonstration that attempts to come to grips with the end of ideology, the mediatization of US politics and their own domestic lives. Tom is a graduate student in post-Frankfurt School philosophy. Chris is an aspiring actor who works part-time in a topless bar. Mixing borrowed texts from Robbe-Grillet, Boris Savonkov’s biography of the Russian revolutionary terrorist Dora Brilliant, Ulrike Meinhof, Patty Hearst and others, and featuring a Ritual Circle that contains a large gorilla mask, they stage a series of “games” that they believe will bring them closer to the truth than any discourse. The play originally ran for four weeks at Mabou Mines’ ReCherChez Studio to some local acclaim. This is its first reprise. This performance coincides with the publication of Disparate Action/Desperate Action by Semiotext(e). – Chris Kraus’ most recent novel is The Four Spent the Day Together. Her other books include the literary biography After Kathy Acker, I Love Dick and Where Art Belongs. She is a co-editor of the independent press Semiotexte alongside Hedi El Kholti and she is currently teaching writing at Deep Springs College.
