“When you were mentioning Citizen Kane and 2001 [A Space Odyssey], you forgot to add Drive, we’ll let that slip” (Nicholas Winding Refn in Conversation with William Friedkin, 2015) In his first Hollywood effort, Nicholas Winding Refn’s Drive pulls none of the punches he delivered back home in Denmark. Drive brings Refn’s signature blend of drama and ultra-violence to Los Angeles. A stuntman moonlighting as a getaway driver must help his neighbor’s recently paroled husband in a supposedly routine pawn shop robbery. A million dollars and a few dead bodies later, the stuntman must confront a terrifying gangster to save the lives of his neighbor and her young son. A blood pumping score by Cliff Martinez and career high performances by Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan and Albert Brooks underscore a brutal tale of L.A.’s underbelly.
