Édouard Manet’s paintings of modern Parisiennes offer more than elegant exteriors; they reflect the complex ways women fashioned their identities in late 19th‑century Paris. This talk examines Jeanne Demarsy, the model for Manet’s *Jeanne* (1882), whom critics would declare the most beautiful woman in the world, as a case study in the construction of quintessential Parisian chic. Once a circus performer and actress, Demarsy rose to become a celebrated figure of the Parisian demimonde, known for her beauty, bold fashion sense, and meticulously crafted public image. Drawing on newly uncovered photographs, illustrations, and even a scandalous lingerie bill, art historian Justine De Young reveals the real woman behind Manet’s canvas. This talk explores how Demarsy leveraged her beauty and body to command attention in Belle Époque Paris, providing a new perspective on Manet’s art and the ways women navigated the opportunities and constraints of public life in a city obsessed with appearances.
