GHOST WORLD is the joyfully glib 2001 comedy from director Terry Zwigoff and screenwriter/comic book artist Daniel Clowes. Based on Clowes' ‘90s alternative comic book, GHOST WORLD stars Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson as two teenage girls unsure of where to go with their lives once they’ve graduated high school. Combatting their uncertainty with a healthy dose of cynicism, the girls spend their days mocking others as a way to postpone their own adult responsibilities. A prank against a middle-aged sad sack of a record collector (played by Steve Buscemi) grows into a friendship between the collector and one of the girls, setting off a chain of events that will push the girls past the point of no return when it comes to breaking free of their self-imposed prison of awkwardness and insecurity. GHOST WORLD is a strangely beautiful film full of rich characters, biting satire, and our collective hatred of all these extroverted, obnoxious, pseudo-bohemian losers. Bitchin'.
