Beginning in 1765, Joseph Wright of Derby exhibited a series of candlelight paintings in London—vivid scenes set in dark interiors lit by the glow of a single candle or small oil lamp. Works such as *Three Persons Viewing the Gladiator by Candle-light* established his reputation as one of the leading painters in 18th-century England. Exhibition curator Julia Siemon will share new research about these paintings, the most artistically and technically adventurous works of Wright’s career. For in-person attendees, a light reception follows the program.
