LACMA, Los Angeles
Making its U.S. premiere, *City of Dance* is a new, hour‑long work set to Philip Glass’s full score for *Koyaanisqatsi *(1982), the groundbreaking non‑narrative film by Godfrey Reggio exploring themes of modernity, acceleration, and “life out of balance.” Created by a collective of internationally renowned artists—Dimitri Chamblas, Benjamin Millepied, Jamar Roberts, Pam Tanowitz, and Madeline Hollander—the work engages audiences with ideas of speed, ecology, community, sustainability, and the shifting pace of contemporary life. *City of Dance* is an ambitious, multi‑day public arts initiative that reimagines public spaces across Los Angeles through free, site‑specific dance performances transforming iconic and unexpected locations into stages, inviting audiences to encounter movement as part of the city’s everyday rhythm and to experience their urban environment through community, choreography, and shared public space. LACMA's presentation of *City of Dance* will take place outdoors on the plaza level of the David Geffen Galleries, on and around Mariana Castillo Deball's monumental site-specific artwork [*Feathered Changes*](https://unframed.lacma.org/2026/01/07/50-works-50-weeks-mariana-castillo-deball-feathered-changes), connecting art, architecture, and visitors alike with the deep history of the site.
