Celebrate the next generation of jazz innovation at the Make Jazz Fellowship Culminating Concert, featuring 2026 fellow Skylar Tang in an unforgettable evening of new compositions and improvisational brilliance. Held at the legendary World Stage in Leimert Park, this special performance marks the culmination of the fellowship’s creative journey and will be available both in-person (RSVP required) and via livestream. Skylar Tang is a multidisciplinary musician known for her dynamic trumpet playing and profound compositions. Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, Tang currently studies History and Jazz Performance at Columbia University and The Juilliard School in New York City. At nineteen-years of age, Tang is one of the brightest young voices in the international jazz scene. She has shared the stage with renowned artists such as Sean Jones, DeeDee Bridgewater, and Rufus Reid, and was featured on Joshua Redman’s latest album, Words Fall Short. She has performed at Carnegie Hall, SFJAZZ, Dizzy’s Club, the Kennedy Center, Monterey Jazz Fest, Davies Symphony Hall, and more. Her international appearances include a two-month residency at Expo 2025 Osaka, and tours in the United States, Europe, and South Africa with Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Orchestra Jazz Band. Sponsored by the Herb Alpert Foundation to honor and support jazz artists, 18th Street Arts Center annually hosts its Make Jazz Fellowship, awarded to a jazz composer for a three-month, fully funded residency. This opportunity is for an individual jazz artist to advance or complete a body of original compositions, while living and working on 18th Street Arts Center’s campus. The award supports the artist by providing a monthly stipend, a furnished live-in studio, and arranged opportunities for collaborative and educational partnerships with Los Angeles-area musicians, colleges, and universities. This event will be in-person at the World Stage and live-streamed online.
