WHAMMY!, Los Angeles
Join us for a special "Black Friday" screening of the contemporary Australian microbudget feature. Lou and Noodles are consumers. Adrift and empty, they are separate from each other and from the world. Ruled by desire and uncontrollable drives to excess, they spend their solitary hours in spaces both real and unreal. Occasionally, they are in the same part of the mall. A deeply personal evocation of the alienation of consumer spaces and the loneliness that late capitalism both creates and feeds on, MALLS is a lament for a culture that is most alive in its doomed attempts to escape itself. Drawing equal inspiration from Tsai Ming-liang, the early work of John Waters, and the inevitable online brain-rot of its young creators, the film is a micro-budget testament to making your own fun in a world of fading possibility. *“A dazzling slow-cinema study of consumerism and alienation, via two young drifting solitaires... a mesmerising film with great depth, penetrating its characters' souls... the concluding sequences are exhilarating.” -* ***Bill Mousoulis*** (filmmaker, programmer, founding editor of Senses of Cinema) “A voraciously original feature debut from Adelaide filmmaker Daniel Tune, for whom the failing infrastructure of late capitalist life is a kind of silly putty... A film that has completely reshuffled my sense of the possible in contemporary Australian filmmaking” - ***Indigo Bailey***, Rough Cut Film “Melancholy and often gross, appropriate for a film titled in mock tribute to some of the worst, most lonely places on Earth... Tune deeply understands the how and why of a long take on tender pain; the whole frame is alive with geometry and movement” – ***Kai Perrignon*** *(filmmaker, head programmer at Brunswick Underground Film Festival)* **dir.
