Before Carrie (1976) launched Brian De Palma’s career into the stratosphere, there was PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE (1974), a film far louder, stranger, and more colorful than the thrillers he would become known for. A vicious satire of the music industry, the film follows Winslow Leach, a gifted songwriter who falls prey to Swan, a ruthless record producer who squeezes artists for everything they’re worth, and discards them once they’re no longer profitable. Blending Phantom of the Opera, glam rock, horror, and black comedy, De Palma transforms the corrupt machinery of fame into a neon nightmare of contracts, exploitation, and revenge.
