Andrzej Zulawski’s intense genre-bending thriller delves into the psychological—and biological—effects of separation and jealousy. Driven to the brink of madness by his wife Anna’s sudden indifference, Mark hires a private eye to find the source of her new infatuation, unaware of the horrors awaiting them. Told by the production team that he should keep the murderous object of Anna’s desire unseen, Zulawski was of the belief that if one doesn’t want to show it, they shouldn’t make the film. Carlo Rambaldi was hired to create the otherworldly creature, departing from the sleek designs of his recent work in Hollywood, and pulled from his roots in lower-budget horror and sci-fi films to build the terrible monster that appears on-screen. Isabelle Adjani’s frighteningly committed, physical performance as... Anna, along with Sam Neill’s distraught Mark, makes Rambaldi’s creature even more realistic and horrifying.
