After being dumped publicly at the altar by his co-star, famous actor Michael (Louis Koo) falls into a drunken stupor that leads him to hide away in a truck that whisks him up into the snowy mountains of Shangri-La. The truck in question belongs to Sue (Sammi Cheng Sau-Man), a widow in denial that her late husband, who got lost in the woods nearby, is gone forever. As Michael starts healing himself in the tranquility of Sue’s quaint motel, he begins to fall in love with her. ROMANCING IN THIN AIR director Johnnie To is most well known for his action and crime thrillers; his foray into melodramatic romance – a subgenre that is a staple in East Asian cinema – is touching, sweet, and deeply melancholic. Although To’s film definitely hits all the tropes that define romantic dramas, it’s also a love letter to storytelling and how cinema draws people to each other.
