Sacred Harp Singing

Sunday, April 26, 2026 at 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM

FOYER-LA, Los Angeles

Join us on Sunday, April 26 as participating artist Simon Klein will be welcoming sacred harp singing into the exhibition as a model for catharsis, community engagement, co-creation, and embodied experience within the exhibition. Shape note singing, which is the form sacred harp takes, is a style of singing made for participatory learning.  As part of fiction/nonfiction, the singing embodies a similar mode of production to works in the show, namely, a desire for collaboration without specific outcome: No two singings are alike.  No experience is required and attendance itself is participatory. The practice welcomes those of all singing abilities and knowledge, especially if you think that you cannot sing. This gathering is a "bring your own chair" event where we ask those who are attending to bring a way to sit. Sacred harp singings usually have a potluck, where guests are welcome to bring food/snacks/and drinks to share with other participants.
