Scribble, Los Angeles
In 1995, weirdo pop pioneer and Canadian cult favorite Spookey Ruben stunned the alternative scene with his kaleidoscopic debut Modes of Transportation Vol. 1 . Praised as the " Pet Sounds of the 90s" and a "lo-fi pop masterpiece", the album shot to the top of critics' Top Ten lists and catapulted Spookey into world-wide acclaim. Hailed as the next Todd Rundgren, Spookey "rammed sunshine pop, new wave, blue-eyed soul and dayglo sampladelia into a blender and braced himself for impact" (The Wire). His hyper-inventive home-spun approach influenced Feist, Esthero, and Owen Pallett, who believed Spookey "broke through the fog like a radiant sunbeam of pop excitement". His sound echoes in indie today, from the raw bedroom rock of Alex G to the kitchen sink pastiche of Kirin J Callinan. To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Modes 1 , Spookey's band will perform the album front to back, joined onstage by special guest musicians and entertainers. The festivities will be hosted by Troy Nelson of KEXP and feature the DJ stylings of L.A. legend Don Bolles. Come celebrate Spookey's seminal album at Scribble - it even comes with a surprise opening act! Doors at 7:30pm. Advance tickets available here!
