The Apartment

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema - Downtown, Los Angeles

A young upstart, C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon), will do anything to move up in the world...even loan out his apartment to the higher-ups for their romantic flings and extramarital trysts. All seems relatively fine and dandy until C.C. finds a romance of his own. Billy Wilder is a genius – there aren't enough words in the world to describe all the films he's made and express how much he means to cinema – but in 1960, Wilder wrote and directed a perfect movie. I'm not saying this to sell you on the idea of seeing this film at the Alamo; I'm stating it as a fact. There are very few instances where you watch a movie and realize you are witnessing pure magnificence in that moment. Sometimes you think about a movie after the fact, and it gets better and better until you begin to love a movie you previously only really liked. THE APARTMENT is NOT one of those movies. It is a movie where, within 15 minutes of watching, you realize it is unlike anything you have ever seen before. Jack Lemmon is amazing, Shirley MacLaine is a full-on pixie dream girl, and the chemistry and dialogue snap and sparkle like you wouldn't believe.
