Director Stephen Sommers’ THE MUMMY RETURNS is not only the action-packed follow-up to his beloved 1999 original, but it also marks the big screen debut of one Dwayne Douglas “The Rock” Johnson. Nine years after condemning Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) back to the underworld, Rick (Brendan Fraser) and Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) have settled down, had a quick-witted kid, and are living their best adventurer lives. Unfortunately for them, a reincarnated version of Anck-su-namun (Patricia Velasquez) and a few more Imhotep-worshiping knuckleheads are hellbent on bringing the mummy back so that he can claim the unstoppable power of an ancient warlord, the Scorpion King (Johnson). Cue the desert-trotting adventure. While not as revered as its predecessor, THE MUMMY RETURNS is still a grand journey with big thrills and some laugh-out-loud moments. Fraser and Weisz bring charm in a big way, and it’s fun to see The Rock in a movie before he became one of the biggest stars in Hollywood – even if he’s covered in CGI that isn’t, like, the greatest ever. That’s all part of the charm though. Plus, Anubis’ army of jackal-headed warriors is still rad as hell.
