We all know digital media on the internet and on apps is ephemeral. Subject to takedowns, hacks, server errors, and lost passwords, it can feel like we don’t actually own the media we make and watch. Whether you want to preserve your own media or gather videos from across the internet - your favorite creator, a research project, or just content you think is important - this workshop is for you! This workshop will introduce you to free and open source tools that you can use to pull down videos and video metadata from the internet, including on app platforms like TikTok. We will be using yt-dlp and ffmpeg as our primary tools. If you’ve never heard of them, great! This is for complete beginners, no knowledge assumed. ## The workshop includes: A fun and playful introduction to using the command line, which is a direct way to access free and open source tools. A step-by-step walkthrough for downloading and setting up yt-dlp (a youtube downloading tool) Detailed instructions and walkthroughs of some basic commands to: - Download videos via browser links - Download video metadata - Convert video files between "lossless" and "lossy" compression formats Other cool tools, tips, and essential resources!
