Artists in late medieval and early Renaissance Northern Europe combined symbolic meaning with narratives of domestic intimacy to present the Holy Family as a relatable model. Shaped by religious texts that characterized Joseph as a loving and active provider, the popularity of these tender images went "viral" through the 15th and early 16th centuries.
