Haley Fohr of Circuit des Yeux presents her piece “Wordless Music,” a recent work for solo voice that Fohr describes as “a simple concept -- one microphone, and one voice.” In this instance, she expands the performance to include Alan Sparhawk (of Low). Multi-instrumentalist Angel Deradoorian opens the bill. ~ In 2019 Fohr’s late grandmother fell to extreme side effects of late onset Parkinson’s Disease. “Watching the disease move around her body and paralyze different parts of her - one day her throat, the next day her legs, pushed me to take stock in the physicality of my musicianship. This piece is an exploration in direct response to my grandmother’s experience. I am enlightened and inspired to utilize my body to its utmost powers of resonance and projection.” She continues, “‘Wordless Music” is improvisational in spirit and a meditation on nowness. When I began performing Wordless Music in public, my personal practice was transformed into a very powerful action in which I become nothing more than a body emitting energy into the world. I have been left inspired by the stripping of context and feel a new freedom in my literal form. I am able, I am conscious, I am here in this moment, I am body shouting into the world, nothing more and nothing less.”
