World AIDS Day: How Sex Positivity Saved Lives

Tuesday, December 1, 2026 at 7:30 PM to 10:00 PM

The Broad, Los Angeles

**Join the filmmakers and Annie Sprinkle for an evening of film clips and conversation exploring how Robin Byrd’s sex-positive public-access show became a platform for safer-sex advocacy during the AIDS crisis.** Commemorate **World AIDS Day** at The Broad with a behind-the-scenes look at the HBO documentary*** Bang My Box: The Robin Byrd Story***. Before the internet, late-night New York TV icon **Robin Byrd** used her boundary-pushing public access show to champion sex-positivity and free speech. Across roughly 600 episodes, which she is now working to archive, the accidental activist built a devoted following that by the early 1980s included many gay men, just as a mysterious disease with no known treatment began to devastate their community. Alongside her steady messages about freedom and inclusion, special guests, and go-go dancers, Byrd sent a clear directive for the time: safe sex saves lives. This evening’s program consists of a series of highlight clips from the film along with a discussion between co-directors **Jyllian Gunther** and **Stephanie Schwam**, editor **Jeremy Stulberg**, and sexologist and contributor to the film **Annie Sprinkle**. Robin Byrd will not be in attendance. ## Know Before You Go Please note that The Broad closes at 5 pm on Tuesdays. Doors will reopen for the program at 7:15 pm.
